With a new broadcast home on CBS, new owners, and a vastly expanded voting body, the Golden Globes 2024 are aiming  to resume their place in the awards show pantheon—and there will be some major stars in attendance to help them. Hits like Barbie and Oppenheimer earned a large number of nominations across many film categories, as expected, while television favorites like Succession, The Bear, and The Last of Us dominated in the television categories. And even though their films are not figuring into the Oscar race as prominently, stars like Jennifer Lawrence, Matt Damon, Timothée Chalamet, and Nicolas Cage all earned nominations thanks to the comedy-or-musical categories, meaning the Globes very well might be the starriest event of the busy awards show season.

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, a critical darling in addition to being the biggest movie of 2023, is poised to have another huge night, with a massive nine nominations— including three in original song alone. It’s joined, as it has been ever since the memes about their shared release dates, by Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which has eight nominations, including three in the acting categories for Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., and Emily Blunt. The twin powers of Barbenheimer are divided across the comedy and drama categories, which means it could be a huge night for both of them. But they also face competition from relatively smaller contenders like Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, which has eight nominations, and Yorgos Lanthimos’s Poor Things, the elaborate coming-of-age comedy starring Emma Stone. 

On the television side, Succession leads the pack with nine nominations, to no one’s surprise; now the question is how many of its actors will give acceptance speeches and then repeat the feat at the strike-delayed Emmys next week. It will also be an intriguing moment for The Bear, which thanks to its schedule and the Emmys delay has yet to be awarded any Emmys, but is competing at the Globes for the second time. Jeremy Allen White was the show’s sole winner last year, but he could very well be joined by some of his co-stars this year, in addition to a best comedy series win for the show as a whole.
