As Balmoral Castle and Buckingham Palace’s East Wing Open to the Public, a Royal Good Time Awaits
July and August tours of Balmoral Castle, the expansive estate nestled within 50,000 acres of lolling Scottish Highlands, are already sold out, but those who have snagged tickets will get the chance to explore newly opened rooms inside what was Queen Elizabeth II’s beloved country home. As for what to expect? Photographer Milton Gendel noted during his 10-day visit to the estate in 1976 that “despite the grandiose setting, the atmosphere was relaxed.”
For those who can’t make it to Scotland, there is the option to roam through Buckingham Palace’s East Wing, which has opened following an over five-year renovation. The East Wing features the famous central balcony, where the royal family traditionally greets crowds during festivities, a scene visitors may reenact themselves by waving to imagined crowds gathered for Trooping the Colour below.
No matter the locale, royalists will have their pick of the most regal sites for a stroll through the corridors of the crown. Below, a gathering of perennial accessories, crockery, and trimmings that are anything but garden variety.
